It does all its supposed to do, brews quickly, faster than several other coffee pots I've had over the years. Auto timer is excellent for those who have trouble waking up in the morning. However, the plastic used in this coffee pot leaves a taste in the coffee, I have ran vinigar and water through it 3 times and it still lingers weeks after recieving it. You may be better off purchasing one of gevalia's better coffee makers.

Use alcohol to wipe down the insides.

Apparently the plastic residue is soluble in alcohol, and I've had good success rubbing down a new coffee maker with isopropyl alcohol and paper towels. Then a lot of rinsing through.

had it about 3 months and it leaks ... to make a 10 cup pot you have to add 6 cup of water before brewing ends this is second machine to do this both same type a $9.99 coffee maker could do a much better job and grounds in the coffee like crazy ... filter basket too big for # 2 but too small for # 4 cone filter ... NEVER AGAIN ...

I have had two of these coffeemakers and both had the same issues. They quit running in the middle of brewing a pot of coffee and/or they shut off right at the end of brewing. Both of these lasted about two months at best.

We received this coffee maker approximately 9 years ago and have used it almost everyday since then. It has performed great until recently. It turns itself on and off and the clock/program function are going haywire and don't work anymore. We have to unplug it between uses. We will probably get a new coffee maker due to the concern of a fire but this coffee maker has been excellent. I can't believe it has lasted as long as it has. Great job Gevalia!!

I have had this coffee maker for about 2 months and we have had nothing but problems with it. At first we had problems with the coffee getting everywhere but the carafe. We figured out pretty quickly that you have to be very careful about how you put the carafe in to make sure the coffee doesn't overflow as noted by others as well. Now we can't seem to find the magic touch to not have a ton of coffee grounds in the carafe. We have tried different filters, less grounds, how we put the filter in, etc. Keep in mind, we never make more than 8 cups at a time. I love the ease of programming and how quickly it brews, but I really don't enjoy chunks in my coffee in the morning!!

I bought a permanent wire filter at a dollar store and that is all I use and I have no grounds and my maker makes a full carafe of coffee with no problems at all. Try to find the wire permanent
wire basket and see if it works. It cost me $3.49.

Great coffee maker. Easy to use and clean up is a snap. Only problem is that after 4 weeks use the glass container at the bottom just started leaking. I checked the bottom and it had a slight crack. I need a replacement but don't know if I can have one sent. The product is great. Easy to use and clean.

I'm a college student living in my own apartment and I'm new to drinking/making my own coffee. But this coffee maker is so simple, with just a touch of a button, I can brew my own cup and program it to make it automatically each morning. I've had this for about 2 months now, and I haven't had any problem with it so far!

I purchased my coffeemaker in 1993 and it finally died (stopped brewing) New Years day (2013) (no lie). I ran out that day and bought another brand and now I have to put my cup of coffee in the microwave just to get it hot after brewing. No comparison!

If you're looking for an excellent-quality coffeemaker without all the unnecessary bells-and-whistles, this is the one! The coffee brews quickly - under 5 minutes for 12 cups - the decanter is very sturdy and does not drip like many others I've owned, and the coffee brews at the perfect temperature. I also like that the LCD display is located at the base of the unit which prevents steam and moisture from entering the coffeemaker's electronics. I've owned "other brands" where the clock was directly above the decanter and steam during the brewing cycle shorted-out the circuitry making the clock and programming features unusable. Of important note is that the overflowing problems noted in previous reviews simply does not occur if you follow the instructions! Make sure the filter basket is snapped closed prior to brewing, that the carafe lid is secured and is properly seated on the warming plate firmly against the back of the coffeemaker, that that the paper filter is not bent or folded, and that you don't use so many grounds that you're attempting to brew mud instead of coffee! Also, don't remove the carafe during the brewing cycle for more than 30 seconds as doing so will cause the filter basket to overflow with hot water and coffee grounds. Common sense! I've never had a problem! Overall, the Gevalia Classic Programmable Coffee Maker - Model # C-60A - is a winner in every respect! Well-designed, well-constructed, makes a darned good cup of coffee, and looks great on the kitchen counter! What more could you ask for?
Yes, I recommend this product.

The Best Coffee Maker Ever!
Posted December 16, 2012
I have had my Gevalia coffeemaker for now up to today 12 years and I loved it! At time is did give me a bit of trouble but once cleaned and maintained with white vinegar it runs like a champ. Keeping up the the cleaning I feel is key to a good long lasting coffee maker no matter what the brand is.
Their coffee is to die for and now you have teas...excellent. I will be buying another Gevalia coffee maker online very soon.
Happy Holidays to all!

I have had some major problems with this coffee maker. As others mentioned, I too had overflow issues. I am making sure the filter is in correctly as well as the basket, and I am not putting too much water in as it overflowed when I did 8 cups. Coffee has been spilled all over the counter from coming out of the bottom, and I have an excessive amount of coffee grounds in my coffee. I have had better luck when using the brownish colored filters. It doesn't overflow with those although I still struggle with getting coffee grounds in it. I have had a number of people at my house trying, and they have the same problem, so I know it's not just me! I actually can't believe more people haven't complained about it. I've included some pictures of what happened to me this morning.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I might get bitten in the rear, but I use a wire mesh basket and I have had none of the problems you have and I fill my maker with a full carafe of water. You might find a wire mesh basket and with it you also never buy paper filters, think of the savings.

Pause-&-Serve Does NOT Stop The Brewing Process!
Posted October 8, 2012
Mlndyng: You stated in one of your comments that the coffeemaker "doesn't stop brewing when you remove the pot like it's supposed to". The pause-and-serve feature on ANY brand of coffeemaker does NOT stop the brewing process when you remove the carafe - it only stops the coffee from flowing into the carafe. The hot water continues to flow into the filter basket. If the carafe is removed for more than 30 seconds, the filter basket WILL overflow because the coffee has no where else to go. The pause-and-serve function is nothing more than a spring-actuated rubber stopper at the base of the filter basket. When the carafe is removed, the stopper closes preventing coffee from flowing onto the warmer plate. So just to clarify - nowhere in the instructions, nor on the Gevalia website, does it state that this coffeemaker 'stops brewing' when the carafe is taken off the warming plate. I'm happy to hear that you are having better luck with a different type of filter, but I've NEVER had an overflow problem with my Gevalia Classic coffeemaker regardless of the brand of filter used. Your situation is indeed baffling! I recommend removing the filter basket from the swing-out door (there is a plastic handle on it to allow for easy removal) and washing it out with clean tap water. Pay special attention to the rubber stopper at the bottom, making sure that no coffee grounds are trapped underneath it by pushing it up and down while rinsing. Replace the filter basket into the swing-out door properly (it only fits one way, so rotate it until it drops into place). Place a #4 cone filter into the basket and push it down all the way down to the bottom with your fingers. Fill with coffee grounds (I use no more than 5 or 6 scoops for a full 12-cup pot) and make sure the top of the filter is not sticking up above the basket and that it isn't bent or folded. Snap the door closed and brew a pot - you shouldn't have any problems! Hope this helps!

Here Are Some Recommendations:
Posted October 6, 2012
Make sure that that paper filter is properly placed into the filter basket and is not bent or folded after adding the coffee grounds. Also, be sure the filter basket is snapped closed prior to brewing, the carafe lid is secured and that the carafe is properly seated on the warming plate firmly against the back of the coffeemaker, and that you don't use too many coffee grounds. Cone-filter brewers generally make stronger coffee, so less grounds are needed. Also, don't remove the carafe during the brewing cycle for more than 30 seconds. The pause-and-serve feature only stops the coffee from flowing into the carafe - it does NOT stop the brewing process! Keeping the carafe off the warming plate for over 30 seconds will cause the filter basket to overflow with hot water and coffee grounds. This is true of ALL coffeemaker brands with pause-and-serve.

what isn't and what IS the overflow problem.
Posted October 6, 2012
I am not removing the pot while it is brewing. One time I tried to do that (removed it for about 5 seconds) and the pot did not stop. (that's a seperate problem I guess.) The problem is with the filter. After MUCH experimenting, that's what it comes down to. For everyone who is having overflow problems-- the filters they send you are TERRIBLE. I would highly recommend buying the brown, more expensive filters if you want to keep the pot instead of throwing it in the trash. When I use the brown filters, I do not have overflow issues. I only have problems now with getting some coffee grounds in the coffee when I make a full pot. It has nothing to do with removing the pot while it is brewing. It's the filter! I didn't believe it, but that's the only thing that works! I still wouldn't recommend this coffee maker just because making coffee shouldn't be this hard. And, it doesn't stop brewing if you remove the pot like it is supposed to. (and I'm not saying I run around the house 5 times before putting the pot back on.)

THIS coffeemaker (approx 8 years old and used every day) needs less grounds than other makers-maybe that is why it overflows! Coffee is always rich tasting compared to the same amount of grounds as in another brand of maker (one of mine is a commercial product). It IS slower than other brands, but is reminiscent of the old time drip coffeepots, therefore richer flavor...

This is a wonderful coffee maker. It's to the point. No fancy gadgets but what you'd want, like "preset", so it's ready when you get up in the a.m. It brews quickly so you're not waiting around, and, it's easy to clean. Also, the water reservoir is separate from the coffee reservoir and believe me when I say that that is a BIG deal. The only down-side for us is that being that it's white and the coffee is so rich, it does stain regardless of cleaning and/or wiping it down everyday. The accessories in my kitchen are all black as were my previous coffee makers and that would have been a nice choice. Eventually, I'll get a new, black one. The only reason it got 3 stars instead of 5 is because of the staining and it would have been nice to have a choice of colors.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I got this coffee maker 3 days ago and it's going in the trash. I am so irritated. I used the Gevalia filters & coffee, brewed a half a pot and the grinds overflowed into the pot. When I opened it to take out the filter it looked like sludge. I am disgusted with it. I was so excited to get a new coffee maker as I have been using a one cupper for years but I love Iced coffee so this was going to be my way to make it. Thanks but no thanks Gevalia, I will stick to my old ways.

if the basket is not properly installed in the unit, it will overflow. It must be klicked into place I like to use a funnel when filling the water. ..

ALWAYS CHECK THE FILTER BEFORE STARTING TO BREW
Posted September 23, 2012
I have had this particular 12 cup coffee maker for about 13 years and I have only had the mishap of coffee grounds in my coffee once. I failed to make sure the filter was in correctly before starting to brew. I think that after you fill the filter with the coffee it tends to pull away from the basket and when the water drains in...the filter goes limp. Anyway I have never had anymore problems and I just love my coffee maker. I have a white one and when I had my kitchen remodeled with white cabinets it still looks good on my counter and there are no stains on it after all these years. Thank you Gevalia for a great product!!
